Youtube vs. Newgrounds

Posted by ActiveObjectX Jul. 4, 2008 @ 1:14 PM EDT

Newgrounds is good for animations. Youtube is good for video. You can find animations and video on both sites. Youtube has shitty compression, Newgrounds doesn't.

On Newgrounds, you are guaranteed at least 200 views on anything you submit (because of the blam system) but on Youtube you aren't guaranteed shit. On Newgrounds, even if you stuff gets showcased it will peak at a certain amount of views and creak along from there (unless you create a really awesome video that really picks up like Adam Phillips or Egorapter (sorry rtil I like egorapter)). On Youtube, since about 90% of the stuff there is bad most of it goes unnoticed, but if your video gets showcased then you have the opportunity for many more views. There are also a lot more people on Youtube than newgrounds, so more people can see the video (animation or live action).

My original Scatman video was posted here on newgrounds first. It won an award but wasn't ever showcased and so it stopped getting views. I posted the same video on Youtube where it pretty much got nothing for about a month, but then people started to trickle in. Now, unlike newgrounds where when you have a surge of people it stops, on Youtube it doesn't work that way. This surge of people just kept coming, and get growing. At the time of this post, my scatman on newgrounds has 17,182 views while on youtube it has 70,638.

So all in all, what's my final review of what is better? I'd say Newgrounds. Newgrounds helped me get my start. And I feel that Newgrounds has a stronger "community" feeling. I've always loved how you can talk to any flash artists you want to just by messaging them. Though some people on newgrounds are dumb as shit a lot more people on Youtube are dumber than shit.

So in the long run, you will get more views initially on Newgrounds, but in the long run Youtube will get more views.

I've never been one to make stuff for the amount of view it gets, I don't really fall into that whole popularity thing( I would have stopped a long time ago if that were why I made stuff).

Now watch this video.

Everbody Jam!

Posted by ActiveObjectX Jun. 17, 2008 @ 12:40 PM EDT

Glad majority of people area really enjoying it...(and a few people who really hate it, and hate me for it)...

I wish I had more to say on it? It took me 3 weeks to make and it is a lot of frame by frame that is synced to dialog which people who animate know is difficult.

I do quite indeed enjoy it when newgrounds puts my stuff on the frontpage, I get a lot of viewers that way. I owe them a nice big kiss.

Watch this, it funny.

What I am working on.....

Posted by ActiveObjectX May. 29, 2008 @ 1:36 AM EDT

I am working on the sequel to my original scatman video.

(view that here)

Of course, my sequel is turning out much better than the first while still retaining the same "feeling" as the first. I should be done in a week or two if all goes to plan. it's look excellent so far so I think you crazy cats will enjoy it.

Just to give you an idea of the madness you are all in for...

3d animation vs 2d animation

Posted by ActiveObjectX Mar. 4, 2008 @ 8:40 PM EST

Since I've been doing animation, the argument of 2d vs 3d has been brought up to me. I pretty much always had just one view that worked for me. I didn't care as long as it is good. I honestly don't see much of a raging battle going on. The problem is people's view of animation in general. Well, not even people, it's the damn media presenting us this idea that 2d animation is dead and CG is the TAKING OVER. I always pretty much looked over this kinda thing, because honestly, I just like stories. I like telling stories animated, film, or written.

In essence, animation is caricaturing life. 2d or 3d. And what really matters if the STORY. STORY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER. STORY STORY STORY. Animation is just a medium to project the story, no different than film or comics, or books. The reason people say 2d is dead is because the last 2d animation features(in America) weren't that great, and weren't marketed well enough. The studio's ran away saw that 3d animation was getting successful, so put their money where THEY SAY the future is.

But those 3d movies weren't successful because of the fact they were 3d, it's cause they had AWESOME STORIES AND PLOTS AND CHARACTERS THAT SUCK YOU IN LIKE ANY GOOD MOVIE. To be honest, i I have a bias against 3d animation. The problem with it for me is that it just looks like a video game. So I always associate it with a video game. And even when 3d animation is done super duper well, it just looks like excellent stop motion animation. Speaking of stop motion, it's amazing, go do it.

Also I hated the Simpson's movie. It just wasn't that funny(though that is slightly irrelevant).

With the people read this are like, YOU'RE DUMB 2D ANIMATION IS GETTING MURDERED BY 3D.....actually that probably wont happen here since this is NEWGROUNDS...but anyways, it's like this. Look at Broadway, ya know, theater style things. Movies come along, and Broadway shouldn't exist anymore because they can do the same things except movies can be shown to a much vaster audience. Movies didn't have to rely on the actors or anything once it was done. It was just a reel, that was editing and ready to show why plays have the entire cast and crew that need to be perform. For a movie, you just need a projector and the reel. Why does Broadway/theater still exist even though movies are clearly better [not really] for what the purpose is?

Easy to answer. CAUSE IT ISN'T ABOUT THE MEDIUM CHOSEN TO TELL A STORY. It's alllll about the story and the way it is presented. Given, Broadway and theater is struggling recently with crappy plays based on movies and tv shows(...Spamelot anyone...it might have been good, but it was just the movie Camelot on stage). It is an experience seeing something. Theater is an experience, and I hope it never leaves cause it's badass(yeah, i called theater badass, wanna mess?). Movies are a diferent experience( though now with bootlegs and people waiting for dvd's the entire movie experience is going away which make Nate sad(Nate being me))

Photography comes along and should knock painting out of it's place? But people still paint! It is something different, a different experience. Good art doesn't die. Good stories don't die.

Anyways, 2d vs 3d, no battle going on. It's a matter of studios putting their money where the money went. That's why we are now seeing a string of bad 3d animated movies. They are trying to replicate Pixar's success. Pixar is successful because IT ISN'T ABOUT THE ANIMATION TO THEM. They don't make movies thinking, HMM LET'S MAKE REALISTIC WATER IN THIS MOVIE, NOW LETS COME UP WITH A STORY THAT LETS US DO THAT. NO! They don't do that! And tsk tsk to anybody who does that. They do what any good writer does when coming up with a story. They write it, then critique it, then rewrite it again!

I just love stories. And PEOPLE just love stories. The media likes to create battles that don't exist. The people running companies that give out the moneyz to make moviez follow where success has been. Thats why we see movies that are all trying to be epic like Lord of the Rings. Which led to the MEGA flop The Golden Compass(look it up, huge budget, nobody saw it, though I did have some friends who were excited about it). That's why 2d animation stopped being made(tsk tsk at Disney for using Dreamworks to animate the 'Disney' princess animated sequences in Enchanted).

Yeah so all in all, no battle. Just the studios stopped funding it cause they had bad turnouts. Good stories make good movies. Good marketing also makes success.

Yeah, so...yeah...?

POOF GOES DATA.

Posted by ActiveObjectX Feb. 17, 2008 @ 4:32 PM EST

So last week my backup hard-drive broke. Mostly I lost music, movies and tv shows. I did lose some movies I made and some other random stuff , but nothing super important. it was just a let down that my hard-drive went boom.

But last night I was downloading some music(direct download) so it filled up my desktop. But I listened to some of it and actually didn't like it( it was video game remix's). And so I just took all these files(there were lots so I just selected a bunch) and put em in the trash and since I had run out of free space I deleted them right there.

What I didn't realize is that I by accident had grabbed my school folder and other random stuff. Including my current flash projects. I deleted all of them.

The school stuff isn't that bad, since the semester I wasn't working on anything currently that was in that folder. But I did lose all my random flash stuff that was going to be in my next scatman video : (, and also all the older assignments. But I also lost my current flash projects(i had started a Cold as Ice video (I wanted released for valentines day but was a little late with that). And I also lost a few other random projects, and various other stuff. I no longer have the .fla files for some of the cartoons up here on newgrounds either.

I only lost one school assignment though for this current semester, and luckily that assignment is on a dvd so I can rip it back later. It is tough coming to terms with what data I lost, cause it was so much and so quickly.

About those flash movies that I lost. I won't restart them any time soon. I am not in any way inspired to do so, and yeah. I was working on a semi random(not really) video. I actually might do it over, but different. Maybe in a month or two you'll be able to see it...maybe...

So now I am going through my hard drive and seeing what I am lost. It is a tough thing to do. Especially when I got a new hardrive(a few days after the old one broke) but thought I had more time so didn't back stuff up on it.

All I can do is look to the future to make stuff better than all my things before. All I can do is look ahead and not look back. Cause it sucks. I hope nobody else has to go through this kinda thing.

Back stuff up, lesson learned.

There is quite a bit I can talk about with this movie compared to my last movie(Nuts). For one Nuts was an assignment for school, while this was about an assignment for school. This one I did on my own, not really for anything/anyone but myself.
The idea for the cartoon itself is actually pretty old. I conceived it shortly after I finished The Detentions Advocate (May 2006) and even started it then. Sadly, my skills weren't up to where they are now...and needless to say it wasn't very good(it was only 15 frames or so long so no point in putting it up here). With that, I dropped the video and never really thought it would get made.
Shoot to a week and a half ago I decided to make a new cartoon, but what? I thought of a few things, but mostly kept coming up with really short things, that involved a lot of lip-syncing. I didn't want to do one of those, and remembered this cartoon idea from a years past. I drew two preliminary drawings(of the main character) and it started from there.
The movie is vague in that you don't know if the main character is in high school or in college. I wanted to make it so both could relate the movie or something like that.
He is writing my English midterm from senior year. To pick what essay he would write I just opened a bunch of old essays, and decided on that one. The real essay is only four pages long(unlike in the cartoon where it is said ten pages). Anyways, random facts.
-I made the cartoon on a mac.
-I am the first one to IM the kid in the cartoon.
-The main characters name is a mix of two things. My middle name and a character I played in a movie I made for a class last year.
-The second screen name is a real person...who also happens to be the person who is counting down before my Bam sucka thing shows up...and he is never online...
-The part where the person Melissa calls the guy really happened ( as in, I typed my name for an essay and didn't do anything else until two in the morning). My initial idea for that sequence was to show him doing a bunch of other stuff(besides talking on the phone). But it was too cluttered and I canceled out the idea.
- I'm a rather harsh editor and I cut out a lot of stuff, which I will inevitably use in my next scatman style animation.
- The battle song is actually from Super Mario RPG, and so what people are assuming is those random color sequences as random...they aren't...(except the first time I break out into silhouettes sliding across the screen, which is random). To know what I mean search Culex Mario RPG online, and you should be able to see a screen shot of what I am talking about.
It took me about a week to make(since I worked inconsistently, partially cause I have a life(and it's winter break), and I just started Kingdom Hearts about a week ago and just finished it today. Which by the way was a pretty decent game. It was fun to play, but not very deep. Goofy is awesome by the way. Since I did just get a ps2 I'm just borrowing friends games and playing through the classics. I am going to play FFX next. I basically got a laundry list of classics I'm going to play through over the next few months.
Anyways, if you read this then you must be bored....either that or genuinely interested in what I am talking about. Cool.

I'm sure I'll think of other stuff to say, and I'll update with such information...eventually...

Nuts!

Posted by ActiveObjectX Dec. 18, 2007 @ 4:25 AM EST

Hey, I have a new cartoon out, it's alright, why don't you check it out?

It was done as a final for one of my class's. It's alright. I hope it entertains you, I generally have more to say about animations I've done, but with assignments I don't generally have too much input since they are...after all..assignment.

I am starting to get a nice collection of animations on Newgrounds, around 20 or so with one joke animation. I think it is rather interesting to go through them chronologically to see how my animation has progressed. Especially since now my animations are started to get popular, people go back and see...i made bad stuff before(at least I think they are bad). Eh, whatever, rambling.

Yeah, so one of my more popular videos is my Scatman video...now...I have enough material right now to make another Scatman style video, which would only take me a week together ( I did a lot of animation this semester). I don't if know I will since I will need a song at the same strength I am the Scatman is, and those are tough to come by. Heh. Whaaaatever. I am still rambling.

Anywayyyyyyys. This screenshot is from an unreleased short( a short turned series). Nothing special.

Voice acting....

Posted by ActiveObjectX Oct. 11, 2007 @ 3:40 AM EDT

Hey, I am willing to do some voice acting here on newgrounds for people that want it. I usually don't do much voice acting in my own cartoons(cause i write full movies with dialoge, not shorts, and I don't put full movies on Newgrounds). I most do voice acting for friends and people around school, and I am told I am good at it, ha. So anyways, yeah I can do a lot of different voices.

I am best at doing low raspy voices ( Spike from cowboy bebop style) and I can also do the movie preview voice. I can do normal voices too, haha. Just ask and Ill do my best.

I have once done voice acting for my own cartoon(You the Sim, which I also appear in) but that was pretty much my normal voice, ha.

Charger...melted?

Posted by ActiveObjectX Aug. 20, 2007 @ 10:19 PM EDT

Alright, so a few days ago I was on my computer(a macbook) and as just minding my bussiness. Suddenly I noticed the green light that was connected to the charger bink on and off. And the computer stopped charging. I figured it was just maybe a glitch, and looked at the charger and there were no visible issues. So i just continued using the computer. The charger didnt do that again until...

The next day when it got worse. It didn't blink and off, but instead just stopped. And fiddled with the charger wire and and it turned back on. Then I noticed something.

The wire was melting near the tip of the wire( there is a little white box in the center of the wire, and right next to that box the wire was melting). I was like " Huh...weird...".

I still fiddled with the wire and managed when it was in the right position to get it to work. I kept using it. The a day or two later, the wire was worse, and I coudn't actually get it to work. Infact, when I plugged it in, the part of the wire(which now was all the copper insides since the white had melted off) just started smoking and smelled like burning. I looked online to see if other people had this issue. Just about everybody did. Why does apple still supply these chargers even though they are defective? Money prolly.

So anyways, I'm lucky cause I got the protective plan warranty thing and they mailed me a new one that should arrive within the next few days/

But I am without a computer for making cartoons for now.

...pub?
