VG Ball

"A good start to animating"

submission: VG Ball
date: June 19, 2008

Let me start off by saying that I did not see that ending coming. The ball looked pretty good and had some nice animation going....but this was more a sprite movie than anything else. I liked the concept of a ball just going around doing whatever and messing with video game characters and then having them chase after the ball.

For one, the dialogue you had in there I couldn't really understand and what I did understand it wasn't very funny. It sounded like somebody just behind the mike doing voices, not the characters talking if you get what I mean. And some of the music clips seemed out of place(they went by too quickly and just didn't mesh with the movie).

The sprite animation was really smooth and nice. What I would say is work on your own drawing skills so that way you can combine the sprite animating with your own drawings ( the Tankman series is a good example of that). I think good things will happen if you head in that direction.

Just keep making stuff man! You have potential. I stuck around to watch the ending of the animation so it has something to it! You also have a pretty good score. Just keep making stuff!

Author's Response:

Heh, thanks man! Yeah and the voices were a little bad because my friend used his cell phone to record the voice and for some reason when I put it on the flash it decreased in speed so I recorded the sound on a sound recorder on the computer so it sounded even worse.

The reason the music went by too fast was because I never focus on how many frames I should leave, though I know I should make a really big change in that.

Thanks for your honesty! I wrote some ideas for flashes down already but I decided to wait until I get the tablet I'm saving up for since I really can't use sprites for them.

There She Is!! step3

"Very Good"

date: June 5, 2008

You really had a tough act to follow with this one. Step 2 is one of my favorite animations here on newgrounds, so when I saw this on the frontpage I was pretty excited.

I gotta say, you guys really have some excellent animation going on in this. The plot line isn't as good as step 2 but I think that is because you have split this into two animations. You allude to plot that will happen in the other one in this(especially near the end) and that's why I think a small part of me feels a bit empty because I hate cliffhangers. Ha.

Also, this one felt more random to me than step 2, and that was probably the only aspect I didn't like. But that is more of a style preference rather than a real criticism, I still loved the animation.

It's gonna be a tough 2 month wait.

2 - The Story of Khale

"That was awesome!"

I have to say, you really managed to suck me into your movie. Everything in this movie was just excellent and made me want to see more. I went back to watch ep1 right before this, and I knew you had animation skills, but you really put them to use in this movie in such a compelling manner. I loved it.

My one problem was the voice acting. it just didn't work for me. At time's it was too soft, and it's quality just wasn't up there with the sfx/music/animation. It felt amateur compared to everything else.. Also, the acting for them also took me out of the movie, it didn't feel like the characters were talking, but more people behind microphones were talking, not the characters talking to each other within the movie. I didn't buy the vocals, that's really it. Maybe just a better microphone would do it, or better actors.

Everything else was really well done, therefor the acting couldn't really hold it back. And way to end on a massive cliffhanger, it hurts, IT HURTS. I eagerly await episode 3. Take as much time as you need and don't rush it, cause now you have massive expectations!

Alex Seryoua: Episode I

"I'll be honest"

date: March 10, 2008

You don't have to listen to anything I say in this review, but try to take some of it into consideration as you continue this series. You appear to have the passion to want to make the series, but remember you are making it for other people to watch too, so it might be your vision but try to have the viewer in mind when making something. Also, I am not attacking you at all in this review, just trying to help out and give suggestions.

So lets start with what you did well. You can draw pretty well and had some nice details present. Your movie did have a direction to it and always had somewhere to go. Your movie is better than most of the stuff here on Newgrounds.

You came up with a very overused story which means you have to do an excellent job to override the fact the plot is cliche(which you didn't do). The animation/art of this animation looked a lot like a poorly done Esurance commercial (the main character reassembled the girl in those commercials a lot). You really have to work on your animation, and add some fbf in there to make it look much more natural since nearly all of the movements were too clunky and robotic. Now, I don't really have a problem with art as a standalone thing, but it was that the style really didn't match the theme/plot at all.

That is more a matter of direction. The story plot from your movie i assume is dark, and the art (for me) came off as overwhelmingly happy. I couldn't feel for the character. It just didn't go together. I didn't like the limited animation at the beginning that relied too much on your character design and voice acting.

The color scheme didn't really change too much once on the spaceship thing. You played with lighting a tiny bit, but it still wasn't scary, and didn't pull me in. The camera was also too jerky. Also the bitmap images you used felt extremely out of place.

The entire movie moved too fast. I didn't believe anything, there was no suspense, or tension throughout the entire thing, so it wasn't engaging for me the viewer at all. You didn't build the aliens or any of the events it all just kept happening, and because of that, it because rather boring. I didn't feel lost at any point either, so I wasn't feeling for the girl character in it.

I didn't really enjoy the dialogs at the beginning. It felt like a script was being read, it just wasn't natural. The voice acting was interesting at all either.

So you are trying to achieve a vagueness in the first episode to make people interested and watch again later right? It really didn't work for me like that, you had no real exciting things happen that made me interested. It was all just there. I felt no real mystery or thrill aspect to it. That style isn't new, it's not different, it's done all the time, and it's bad, it's amateur. Nice try though, we all have to start somewhere. Even the stuff that people assume is the "doesn't revile a lot at a time" plots like Lost or Heroes still has interesting characters that pull the viewer in. Whatever.

Aside from all that, people seem to be enjoying it. I'll be sure to watch your next episode.

"Strange..."

You made me laugh out loud, so good job. I found the drawing style a little weird, especially that first shot where his eyes are on his forehead, and then the next shot he was relatively normal. It was also weird whenever you had anatomically correct shots randomly stuck in there(which looked as if they were rotoscoped). Just try and keep them more consistent, cause you had a real nice grip on keeping it funny and interesting.

I do think the entire waking up after waking up section might have dragged on a little too long, but it still was kinda interesting. Cool movie.

Metal Gear Awesome 2

"ha, excellent!"

date: February 23, 2008

I only really broke out into laughter twice. Somewhere in the middle(which I don't remember) and at the end. The rest had me smiling and giggling like a schoolgirl.

You amped up your animation a looooooot for this one. You actually did real lip syncing which by the way was done very well. Job well done. And occasionally you followed the human form. All in all, it was well done.

Your voice for snake this time around was slightly different than in the first one, but I quickly got over that. The rest of the voice acting was excellent(including the cameos from other people).

Even with the better animation, and throwing in a few nice drawings here and there, you did manage to keep the spirit of the Awesomeness alive. You managed to keep me entertained the whole way through.

Congrats man, you are going to get a buttload of views and a high score and the star Newgrounds treatment, and other flash artist can't help but be jealous of your success, heh. You do deserve it though. So congrats again!
